Fruitvale Live – Work is a 6,300 sf development for two units in Oakland at the intersection of Fruitvale Ave and Elmswood.
The two adjoining buildings are prototypes for an affordable and partially prefabricated building typology that is using a commercial steel frame and cladding system. The resulting cubic volumes were divided and broken up by carving out floor patios that allow for light and air to penetrate into the living unit on the second floor.
The units consist of two floors, the lower being the work area or garage and the upper floor the office of living space. The skin is made of corrugated polycarbonate panels to allow the penetration of light into the lower space and to give the building an identity that changes throughout the day – and night.
