Mahlzeit is a German salutation used during lunchtime. It descended from more formal salutation and is the short for “Gesegnete Mahlzeit” (archaic term, de:blessed meal). Mahlzeit is also used in a colloquial setting and means “enjoy your meal”.
Mahlzeit is also the proposal for a German cookbook by Berndt Abeck and Peter Strzebniok. Our intent with this cookbook was to show the wide range of traditional German food and its many facets both in terms of ingredients and flavors and in the process to create a German Cookbook that will dispel the negative connotation that is associated with German food, both from a culinary as well as a design perspective.
Most German cookbooks on the American market seem to have been designed 20-30 years ago and mostly continue to spread the stereotype of German cuisine consisting mainly of Sausage, Potatoes and Sauerkraut.
With Mahlzeit we want to change this and deliver a long overdue overhaul of the perception of German cuisine.
Proposals for Mahlzeit are currently being reviewed by several publishers.
