The Monsoon House is our entry for the Cambodia Sustainable Housing competition that was organized by Building Trust International.
Derived from the shape of praying hands and traditional Khmer architecture, the “Monsoon House” seeks to reinterpret the idea of the traditional Cambodian House within the context of contemporary social structures and styles, creating a hybrid of vernacular and contemporary architecture that provides a sense of permanence and tradition while allowing for the flexible requirements of our contemporary society.
The Monsoon House is designed for the specific climatic and cultural conditions of Cambodia, it incorporates local materials such as bamboo, palm leaves and reclaimed wood and incorporates passive sustainable systems such as natural ventilation and shading that reduce the necessity of costly building systems.
